It was quite easy to install and set up, and it has become a very popular free service on our city Web site. People have told me that they have used it for e-invites to public meetings, real estate agents have used it to introduce our city to out-of-town prospects, employees at local businesses send photos to show far-away friends and family where they live and work. For quite a long time, I have been asking various ISP's and developers where I could find a nice, clean and simple e-card program, one that was low-cost and affordable. Recently, through the Developer's Exchange at Macromedia, I was directed to the folks responsible for 'Computer Postcards'. Sure enough – their program turned out to be void of the unnecessary clutter of whistles and horns inherent in so many of today’s programs. I found this one to be clean, straightforward, and easy to set up. This includes putting it on the site, assigning a DSN to the database to make it work; and an easy routine to configure the layout theme and content. Uploading images is direct from the computer to the site and takes only a few minutes depending on the quantity involved. While it's not quite as inexpensive as the cost of film for a digital camera, it's mighty close. At pennies just under $50, it's in the range for just about everyone...way less than what I would have expected to pay for all of the functions that it does. And, if you're a developer like myself doing web sites for a client, it makes a great add-on to the other services offered. From the viewers' point of view, the program does all of the essentials. It allows them free choice of their photos and easy message composition. Sending the finished message is a simple point-and-click with a return copy coming back to the viewer's computer for their record. Retention of viewers' e-mail addresses is a real bonus, especially if you're looking to add potential leads to your client database. With .asp pages, VBScript, Access database, and all the necessary hookups already in place with most ISP's, it's a rock-solid performer and one I'm really glad to see come along.
